Today is World Asthma Day!

Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm. Symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. Asthma is caused by environmental and genetic factors. These factors influence how severe asthma is and how well it responds to medication. The interaction is complex and not fully understood. Diagnosis is usually made based on the pattern of symptoms and/or response to therapy over time. As of 2010, 300 million people were affected by asthma worldwide. With proper control of asthma with step down therapy, prognosis is generally good.
